Moore Online - Help and Information

Aims of the Site

Moore Online has been set up in response to suggestions made during the preparation of the Moore Parish Plan. In June 2006 the Parish Council accepted a proposal submitted by NTS Net who have constructed the site you now see. The aims of the site are to provide a means of communication within the local community and to give general information to visitor's to the website. To this end the site includes an Information page, Who's Who on the local community, an Events Page, for use by event organisers, and a Notice Board for use by everyone. 'Hot' news will be posted on the front/Home page.

The site has been constructed in such a way as to make all the more active parts self-maintaining.

Registration

Whilst we are happy for anyone at all to read our site, it is essential to limit the material posted on the site to that provided by persons with a legitimate reason for posting. For that reason, anyone wishing to use the Events system and the Notice board must register with the managers. This is done online via a link on the Notice Board page.

Choose a short name for yourself which you will use to log onto the site - your 'login name'. You will also need to select a password. (Use one of your PIN numbers if you wish.) Please don't put spaces into these items and make them at least 4 characters long.

The registration will fail unless a valid email address is put into the 'Email' box. If you don't have an email address enter 'default@moore-online.org.uk'.

We ask that you supply address or telephone number so that we can confirm that you live within the local area. Normally, your address details will not be made public on the website or passed on to any third party. However, if you are registering as a representative of a local organisation, you may wish to have your name and address listed on the Who's Who page. In that case, you should provide the name of the organisation, your position within it and select the 'Who's Who' option.

Click on Send Registration and an email message will be sent to a manager who will then activate your membership and send you a confirmatory email.

At various points within the website there are facilities for emailing event organisers and persons on the Who's Who list. These email addresses are stored on a database and not on public view. This is to avoid people 'harvesting' email addresses for the purposes of bulk spam emailing.

Logging In

Any person who knows about the Moore Online website will be able to examine the Events List and the Notice Board. However, only registered members who have logged into the system will be able to post event information and post to the bulletin board.

Simply click on the Login button and enter your Login name and Password. You will then be returned to the 'Home List' page where you can select what you want to do.

Unless you are logged in, trying to access other areas of the site, either via the page buttons or by entering direct URLs into your browser, will result in being sent to the login page.

In order to keep track of your logged in presence, the site will set a cookie on your computer. You will not be able to access the site if you have set your browser to reject cookies. The cookie will be active for 3 hours, after which you must log in again. If you wish to, you can log off when you are going to leave the site.

The Events List

The front page of the site is the current list of events in date order, earliest first. Events will automatically disappear from the list as soon as the date is past.

If you wish to contact the organiser of an event, click on the 'Email' link next to the organiser's name. You can then compose an email will automatically be sent to the organiser.

To post up an event invitation yourself Add Event. You can only do this if you have registered as an event organiser. If you wish to post events, contact the Webmaster via the Contact Us' button and ask to be enabled.

Most important: For technical reasons which I have been unable to bend to my will, dates MUST be put in in the format stated, i.e. month-day-fullyear - 12th January 2007 (My next Birthday - HINT!) will be '01/12/2007'.

If you are logged in, you will find that beneath the box containing the event details two links 'Edit' and 'Delete' will be shown in blue and underlined for each of the events you have organised. That means that you (and only you) will be able to click on that link and edit the event details, or delete it.

If you cancel an event please alter the event posting to say so, as far in advance as possible, rather than just remove it from the list.

Formatting messages

Text inserted into the event 'Details' box and the Notice board 'Message' box will appear on the lists as one continuous piece of text with no line breaks. If you want to be clever and make the text more interesting you can insert tags into the text which will format the text.
For example:
  • inserting this: <br>
    will cause a line break
  • inserting this: <p>

will insert a blank line (i.e. new paragraph

  • putting <b>at the start of a piece of text and</b> at the end will make it bold
  • putting <u>at the start of a piece of text and</u> at the end will underline it
  • putting <i>at the start of a piece of text and</i> at the end will make it italic
  • putting <h4>

at the start of a piece of text and

</h4> at the end will create a centred heading - please use sparingly
  • In fact, if you know about HTML you can do all sorts of wonderful things...

The Notice Board

This board has been set up to allow members to communicate with each other - offer opinions, ask for advice, make general comments on local goings-on, offer items for sale (in a small way!), etc., etc. Only registered members are able to add messages.

If you are logged in, when you read the bulletin board you will find that messages message you have Edit/Delete links at the bottom. Those will allow you, and only you, to alter or delete your message.

Messages will be visible for 1 month and then automatically deleted.

The board will be moderated - i.e. a manager will be keeping an eye on it. It seems invidous to have to say this to one's neighbours, but any abusive, obscene, or messages otherwise considered unacceptable by normal standards of behaviour will be removed as soon as detected and the person responsible will be blocked from the web site.

Sponsors

It is intended that local businesses will be offered the chance to sponsor the website as a way of assuring its long term financial future. Details have not been worked out yet, but is likely that, in return for a small annual fee, sponsors will be provided with the following facilities:
  • a small advertisement on the Sponsors page - this will include a small piece of text, company logo, an optional picture.
  • an email message facility
  • a link to the sponsor's website.
  • a small message on the front page - 'Today the website is sponsored by ....'
Policy has not been decided on whether sponsors will be allowed to post events, nor has the cost .

Anyone wishing to enquire about sponsorship should contact the Webmaster via the Contact Us button.

Managers

The website will be administered by one or more managers. These persons will have special priviledges. They will be able to see, and alter, all the membership information and all bulletin board items. This is necessary so that they can, in the first place, activate membership and subsequently keep an eye on the site and, if necessary, remove unwanted items. Managers must allow at least their own email details to appear in the Who's Who list so that members can contact them.

At the present time the managers are:
Colin Clements 07950 546 703.
